![]() ![]() ![]() The many characters were not easy to keep track of, especially since their spouses, parents and children were all part of the interwoven story. I found this book a bit convoluted, but not hard to read. We find out about the ups and downs of the lives of these women, with some insightful comments which get lost somewhere in the narration. There are many characters but I didn’t get vested in any of them and the narration is mainly done by Marnie. This is a short novel which in turn is divided into twelve short stories. ![]() So basically Marnie goes on tangents, as we all do from time to time, when a word or a phrase reminds her of another event. What can be better at Christmas than cookies…and clubs – Buy the book today*Įven though each chapter in “ The Christmas Cookie Club” is supposed to be about the woman presenting the cookies, it isn’t since we hear the story through Marnie’s ears and are privy to her thoughts. ![]() My rating for The Christmas Cookie Club – 2 The host of the event is Marnie, who started the club, created the rules and has had a complex life herself. Each cookie delivery comes with a story, a recipe and a few historical facts about the ingredients. The event is the annual Christmas Cookie party where twelve women exchange cookies and donate some for charity. “ The Christmas Cookie Club” by Ann Pearlman ( Website | Facebook | Twitter)is a short fictional novel which takes place on one December evening. ![]()

The narrator’s closing of the eyes mimics blindness, and equally important, symbolizes the idea of putting himself in the shoes of the blind man. ![]() It is curious that the narrator is transformed after he tries to draw a cathedral while his eyes are closed. However, he is transformed after he interacts with the blind man, suggesting that knowing people helps to avoid discrimination and prejudices. The blind man’s condition is a metaphor for the narrator’s ignorance about blind people and those who are different from him. To establish the relationship between ignorance and prejudices and racism, the author uses the metaphor of blindness to symbolize ignorance. His unease and surprise are because he has never been around blind people to get to know them better as humans with the same human feelings and needs as himself. ![]() This is seen from the way the narrator feels uncomfortable being around the blind visitor, and is surprised that a blind man can smoke. ![]() The author suggests that racism and racial prejudices often arise from ignorance. ![]() ![]() The effect is to require readers to supply the connective tissue necessary to turn it into narrative – text that is sparse on the page expands on consumption it swells like a sponge in the mind. To say that Assembly is slight would be an understatement: not only is it barely even novella-sized, it is also organised into vignettes, so that its already meagre portion of language is threaded through what seems comparatively like acres of space. Assembly fulfils, with exquisite precision, Virginia Woolf’s exhortation to “record the atoms as they fall upon the mind in the order in which they fall”, even though Brown has restricted herself to an astonishingly small quota of words in doing so. Comparisons with Mrs Dalloway would be neither unwarranted nor, I suspect, unwelcome. Natasha Brown’s virtuosic debut follows a British woman who is preparing to attend a party, and who is musing about her life and her place in the world as she does. ![]() H ere is a short sharp shock of a novel about the kind of person the UK government’s recent commission on race would have wanted to profile in their report. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Wikipedia contributors also give a capsule account of her remarkable transformation from provincial girl-she was born Mary Ann Evans, the daughter of a land agent, in Coventry in 1819-to one of the preëminent intellectuals of the nineteenth century, and the author of “Middlemarch,” widely considered the greatest novel in the English language.
